Drama Terms
1) Plot- what happens in a story.
2) Exposition- beginning of story where characters & setting are introduced.
3) Rising action- events that lead to the climax.
4) Climax- event in story where outcome is certain; solution or failure is certain.
5) Resolution- conclusion where conflict is resolved; plot is unraveled.
6) Conflict the point in a play where action meets obstacle; the opposition of persons, forces,
or ideas that gives rise to dramatic action in a play.
7) Theme- the meaning of a story or lesson of a story.
8) Analysis- to break down into smaller parts for greater understanding.
9) First person- story narrated by oneself using: I, my, we, and our.
10) Third person- story narrated by a person who knows everything using: he or she.
11) Omniscient- knowing everything.
12) Subjective-decision based on feelings or opinion.
13) Objective- decision based on measurements, data, and facts.
14) Antagonist- usually the villain or bad person in the story.
15) Protagonist- usually the hero or good person in the story; the principal character.
16) Tone- the attitude a writer takes towards a subject or character: serious, humorous,
sarcastic; writer frequently use dialogue to set the tone.
17) Improvisation- Developing drama on the spur of the moment with little or no rehearsal time;
impromptu.
18) Pantomime- a scene or play without words; the actors use action and gesture only.
19) Monologue- a speech given by one actor.
20) Dialogue- the words which are spoken in a play.
21) Inflection- tone or pitch of ones voice from a deep voice to a high, shrill voice; intonation.
22) Enunciation- clearly pronouncing a word or words.
